The premises most fondly remembered as ‘Padraigs’and most famously the birthplace of esteemed writer Padraig O Conaire is to reopen this week.

Local catering company Creative Catering Ltd celebrated their 20 years in business on Saturday with a creative and fun afternoon at Castalia Hall, Ballytobin.

Called Festival of the Fires, the festival is a rekindling of the ancient Bealtaine festival – the oldest recorded festival in the Western World. The festival will ignite nationwide on May 1 at the Hill of Uisneach in Co Westmeath (just outside Mullingar) and through the medium of fire, it will be carried to the four corners of the island, with sister festivals taking place in 21 locations.

An artisan food fair is set for Mullingar next weekend, just in time for Christmas shoppers. The fair, which will be held in the Mullingar Park Hotel will take place on Saturday December 13 and Sunday December 14 from 11am to 5pm.

Agri Aware is encouraging Kilkenny’s agri-food sector to stand up and be counted among Irish consumers and influential policy makers, in a major survey designed to assess just how much agri-food is worth to the economy.

From van drivers to accountants, hundreds of Westmeath’s businesses with an income reliant or partially reliant on the sector will be surveyed over the coming weeks. The aim of the research campaign is to quantify and showcase the economic contribution of the agri-food industry.
